Happy Birthday Elise!

On January 6th, 2012, after tossing and turning all night in anticipation, this pregnant momma checked into the hospital, ready to soon meet her baby girl.  I was terrified of having to have a C-section.  I had said since I first found out I was pregnant that I would NOT have a C-section.  Of course, because I said that, little miss was as breech as breech can be, so I ended up with a scheduled C-section.  I spent many hours crying over it.  I’m still a little bitter about having to have a C-section, but it is what it is, and I have a beautiful baby girl now!

Daddy was pretty nervous too.  He tried to pretend he wasn’t since mommy was a pretty emotional mess of nerves, but he definitely was.

The actual surgery wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated.  The spinal sucked, and I hated the feeling of not being able to move.  Luckily my OB was cool and didn’t strap my arms down.  (I had expressed how badly I didn’t want to be strapped down at several appointments).  At the time I was working at the hospital she was born at, so everyone was super nice, friendly, and respectful of my wishes.  We chatted about lunch and how they were going to have pizza during the surgery.  I was excited to have real food again since I had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.  The anesthesiologist made sure I was comfortable and was very supportive.

Then at 12:06, little miss Elise Arabella made her entrance into the world.  They brought her over to me and helped me hold her in my arms while they finished the surgery.  Then my husband accompanied her to the nursery.  After a couple of minutes he popped his head back in the door to tell us that she weighed 7 lbs 2 oz.  We were all shocked (including the OB) because I had been having to have twice a week visits, with BPP, and NST because they were concerned that she was too small and wasn’t growing enough.  My little chunk was as healthy as could be!

I was then taken to the recovery room and with in 10 minutes, she was brought back to me.  I was SO sick from the anesthesia, but so happy to see my angel.  She was so warm and cuddly.  (And she is just as cuddly to this day!)

I know a lot of people have to wait a long time to get their baby when they have a c-section, and this was one of my biggest fears.  But because I was verbal and expressed my concerns with the OB and nursing staff, they made extra efforts to make sure her birth was just as special for me by letting me hold her (one armed while lying down) in the OR and bringing her back to me in recovery before she had even been bathed.  She probably wasn’t in the nursery 30 minutes.  Also, when they took her from the OR into the nursery, they shut the blinds (they offered to, I had no idea that they would do that) so that everyone couldn’t see her and snap pictures of her before I got to actually see her and hold her.  Just in case something was wrong and I didn’t get her back immediately, I don’t think I could have handled people coming and showing me how beautiful my baby was before I got the chance to even see her.  Like I said, I worked at the hospital she was born, and everyone was coming to the window asking to see her, as was family, but the nursery staff and my husband held strong and said not yet.  I’m so very thankful for all that everyone did to make Elise’s birth so much more special for us.

Of course all of our family and friends were very excited, but none more than this man right here.  Elise has had papaw wrapped around her finger since the second he laid eyes on her.  They are best friends, and he spoils her rotten!

Her Grammie and Mamaw Lene may help in that spoiling rotten a bit too! 😉

It is so hard for me to believe that my tiny squishy newborn is now one!  This year has flown by, but has by far been the best year of my life.  She makes me so proud with each new thing she learns.  Her personality is adorable and her kind little heart is so precious and caring.  I am a lucky momma though, because my toddler still loves to cuddle up on the couch under a blanket with her mommy.
